Currently there are 65.3 million displaced persons in the world, 21.3 million of whom are classified as refugees, that is, people outside their countries of origin fleeing persecution. That's roughly the entire state of Florida, forced from their homes and seeking a place to call home, some languishing in camps for decades. Debate over how to best resolve this crisis has splintered our society. Each year, Houston resettles two to three thousand refugees from all over the world. If Houston where a state we would be the 4th largest receiving state in the world. Refugees have a story to tell. My hope is that by knowing the personal stories of refugees, we will overcome fear and indifference, and be willing to embrace the refugees in our midst, acknowledging their achievements and contributions to our society. My hope is that Houston will become known worldwide as a city that welcomes refugees.
